Formula used
This mulch calculator uses area and depth to estimate volume. For square feet and inches, the formula is:
cubic feet = area in square feet x depth in inches / 12
Then cubic yards are calculated by dividing cubic feet by 27. Bag estimates divide the recommended cubic feet by the bag size and round up.
